World Cafe

This is the ‘World Cafe’ designed for Second year studio. Given the Current Site of Mr. Charles (formerly the I.O.O.F building) and the ability to alter everything except the second floor apartments and the fire stair in the north east corner of the building. I chose to keep the building as open a spacious as possible by adding minimal walls and an open first floor. To promote the public use of the cafe the front wall entirely folds into the ceiling allowing the interior to become part of the side walk of College Ave. To mirror that condition I made the back wall also slide out of the way allowing the garden to fall from Calder Way into the open space of the lower floor of the cafe. The arch ways along the eastern ally way serve as a way to open up the eastern wall while still allowing that side of the building to maintain its solidity, giving a contrast to define the open interior volumes. The arches also serve as semi-private booth spaces above and entirely private booth spaces below.
