Library Entrance Design Build. The Stukeman Architecture Library entrance was once a very awkward door-to-corner condition and it was decided that an installation was need to fix this space. Our group was tasked with designing this installation. Our design intent was to create a gradual erosion of the corner condition. the slight curve of the piece helps smooth the mental perception of the abrupt corner, while the steady increase in height eases visitors into the height of the library.
In addition to creating a more pleasant entry-way, the shelving system provided a small amount of secure storage, chalkboard and pin-up space for announcements, shelving for model displays, and ample room for book jackets to be displayed on the vertical slats.
The structure is composed of full maple board vertical slats, maple ply-wood shelf inserts, custom curved door faces, 4 types of angled hinges, magnetic locks, a few hundred inset magnets and 6 mdf shelf plugs. The design was created and constructed by Andrew Vargo, Alice Stewart, Amelia Young, Kyle Del Vecchio, Laura Deluca, Rebecca Lefkowitz, and Stephanie Dando.
