Green Screen

This screen was developed for the furniture rotation of first year design studio. The goal of our project was to design a spatial screen out of recycled materials. These screens needed to act as filters in multiple ways, not just by dividing space. Other projects filtered either light or sound. I chose to have my screen filter space, light, and water. My design was built using old PVC piping that was once used as a watering system in a set of greenhouses at Penn State. In fitting with their origin and the ‘green construction’ nature of recycled materials I felt it was fitting to uses these pipes to grow a hydroponic plant system. In return, the plants helped to fill-out the bony structure of the PVC screen with foliage; helping it to filter light and space. Then, because of the soil and root system, the screen was also able to filter water. Though not exactly a full grey-water system, the screen did filter out dye in a test.

Another byproduct of my design was its adaptability. By not cementing some of the joints; sections of the screen were able to move or rotate, reshaping the screen.
